Italian Red Wines

Italian Red Wines

Italy has captured our hearts like few other wine regions can. From the moment we started building our collection of Italian red wines, we knew we wanted to showcase the incredible diversity this country offers - from the powerful, concentrated Amarones of Valpolicella to the elegant, cherry-bright Chiantis of Tuscany, and the rich, sun-soaked Primitivos of Puglia. What excites us most is that Italy doesn't just have one signature style; it has dozens of distinct regional expressions, each telling its own story through indigenous grape varieties you won't find anywhere else in the world. We've personally sampled every bottle in this collection, often making trips to meet the producers themselves, because that's how serious we are about bringing you authentic Italian quality.

Why Our Italian Red Wine Collection Is Something Special

We've curated this range to give you a genuine tour of Italy's wine regions without leaving your home. You'll find prestigious names like Paolo Conterno's Barolo - a wine that represents the pinnacle of Piedmontese winemaking - alongside more approachable everyday bottles like the G.D. Vajra Dolcetto d'Alba. This isn't about snobbery; it's about having the right Italian red wine for every moment. Fancy a midweek treat? The Masseria Borgo dei Trulli Primitivo delivers gorgeous ripe fruit and warmth. Celebrating something special? The Aristocratico Amarone della Valpolicella 2019 offers the complexity and depth that only partially dried grapes can achieve.

What particularly excites us is stocking wines from producers who remain relatively unknown in the UK but are absolute legends in their home regions. Many of these bottles are exclusive to Givino, which means you're discovering red wine Italian styles that most British wine lovers haven't encountered. We don't just buy what's fashionable - we seek out producers whose passion matches our own.

Exploring the Diversity of Italian Red Wines

The beauty of Italian wine is the sheer variety of grape varieties and styles. Tuscany gives us the Sangiovese-based Chiantis - we stock beautiful examples from Castello di Meleto and Vignamaggio - with their bright cherry fruit and savoury undertones that make them incredibly food-friendly. Head north to Veneto and you'll find the Valpolicella family: from elegant Ripasso wines like the Casalforte that have been enriched with dried grape skins, to the magnificent Amarones that command respect with their power and concentration. Down south in Puglia, Primitivo and Negroamaro offer riper, fuller styles with warming alcohol and generous fruit.

The range of Italian red wine varieties in our collection includes:

• Nebbiolo from Piedmont's prestigious Barolo region - structured, age-worthy wines with roses and tar
• Sangiovese from Tuscany - bright acidity, cherry fruit, and that distinctive savoury edge
• Corvina-based Valpolicella styles - from easy-drinking classics to concentrated Amarones
• Primitivo and Negroamaro from Puglia - sun-drenched, full-bodied wines with generous fruit

Food Pairing With Red Wine Italy

We're constantly asked what to serve with these wines, and honestly, Italian red wines are made for food. They're designed to sit at the table, not to be sipped in isolation. A Chianti Classico is absolutely divine with a rich tomato-based pasta - the acidity cuts through beautifully. Amarone demands something equally substantial: think slow-braised beef or aged Parmigiano-Reggiano. The Primitivo works wonderfully with barbecued meats and spicy sausages. And if you're making a proper Italian feast, a Barolo alongside roasted lamb or wild mushroom risotto is an experience you won't forget.

Here's what sets us apart: every red Italian wine in this collection has been tasted and approved by us personally. We don't stock anything we wouldn't happily drink ourselves.
