Green Wines

There's something magical about green wine that captures the essence of Portuguese winemaking at its most refreshing. When I first discovered Vinho Verde wine, I was struck by its unique character - light, slightly sparkling, and bursting with life. At Givino, I've curated an exceptional selection of green wines that showcase why this style has become such a beloved choice for wine lovers seeking something genuinely different and delightfully drinkable.

Understanding Portuguese Green Wine

The term green wine Portugal doesn't refer to color - it speaks to youth and freshness. Vinho verde literally means "green wine," referring to wines that are meant to be enjoyed young and fresh, capturing their vibrant acidity and natural effervescence. These Portuguese green wines are typically low in alcohol, naturally lively, and perfect for warm-weather drinking. It's a style that's remained virtually unchanged for centuries, and that authenticity is exactly what draws me to these producers.

Why I Love Curating Green Wine Collections

What makes green wine in Portugal so special is its incredible food-friendliness and approachable nature. These wines offer bright citrus notes, green apple freshness, and often a gentle spritz that makes them absolutely perfect with seafood, light salads, or simply enjoyed on their own. I personally taste every green Portuguese wine in our collection, ensuring each bottle delivers that authentic Portuguese character and exceptional value our customers expect.

• Traditional Vinho Verde – Classic expressions from Portugal's historic green wine region
• Single varietal bottles – Showcasing individual grape varieties like Alvarinho and Loureiro
• Estate selections – From family producers I've visited personally
• Food-pairing champions – Perfect with seafood, tapas, and summer dining
• Exclusive imports – Bottles you won't find elsewhere in the UK

Mediterranean Wines: Expanding Beyond Portugal

While Portuguese green wines are my specialty, I also stock exceptional Greek wines that share that same Mediterranean spirit of freshness and authenticity. Greek wine has undergone an incredible renaissance, with producers rediscovering indigenous varieties and traditional winemaking methods. From crisp whites perfect for summer to rich reds with incredible depth, wines of Greece offer remarkable diversity and character.

Serving Green Wine Properly

Here's my advice for getting the most from these wines: serve Vinho Verde wine well-chilled, around 8-10°C, in a glass that allows the gentle effervescence to shine. These wines are meant to be enjoyed fresh and young - don't age them. The natural acidity and light sparkle make them perfect aperitifs or throughout-the-meal companions, especially with lighter fare and seafood dishes.

Quality & Value in Every Bottle

What I love about green wine is how it delivers incredible quality at accessible prices. These aren't precious wines that require special occasions - they're everyday pleasures that happen to be absolutely perfect at what they do. Whether you're discovering Portuguese green wine for the first time or you're already a convert looking for something new, our selection offers authenticity, character, and that sense of place that makes wine collecting so rewarding.
