Babylonstoren Nebukadnesar 2021
TASTING NOTES
This is a quintessential South African Bordeaux blend and the flagship wine of Babylonstoren. Made up of 49% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot, 16% cabernet franc, 5% petit verdot, and 5% Malbec, previous vintages of this wine have raked in a number of awards.
This includes a Gran D’Or at the Michelangelo Awards 2016, a double platinum from the National Wine Challenge, and a gold from the 2016 Vitis Vinifera awards – it’s no wonder the Nebukadnesar was counted as one of the top 100 wines in South Africa for 2016.
All the wines were made separately and matured in new French oak barrels for 23 months, then blended and left in a tank for a month to marry before being bottled and matured for five months prior to release.
A bouquet of intriguing fragrances of violets and thyme, intense blackcurrant and underlying cigar-box will great your nose. The palate is superbly crafted with good balance of vibrant multi-layered dark red fruits supported by tight, well-honed tannins. Handles the oak effortlessly. Opulent yet sophisticated with a long, compelling finish. Satisfying now, but with time will develop and unfold its many treasures.
